Why People Grow Silent

Mostly it is because most speech is incredibly boring.

In everyday language, I can always hear “judge”, advice, threats, pressure — I can hear tension and envy, people testing and confirming their place in the power hierarchy, like ants touching antennae, dogs locking eyes, cats bonking each other on the head.

Language is often a tool of social power. All that talking, listening, communicating — it is nothing more than scrambling to climb a rung higher in the hierarchy, or keeping yourself from falling. In short, desperately squeezing into the power structure.

But the social power structure is a moronic game. It is so damn boring.

As a dog, who cares who is the alpha and who is the stray? You eat, you drink, you sleep, you run — that is enough. What is the point of socializing with a pack of dogs? What is the point of this social circle? What is the point of all this dog talk? You confirm you are ranked 132nd — and then what?

I do not find it useful, and I do not find it much fun. I do not want to waste my time on something so fucking stupid — and apparently, this is what they call silence.

Even a word as solitary as “silence” is tangled up in power. The chattering masses show off before the unspeakable, and they show off just to evade shame.

When you use the word “silence” without paying attention, it is easy to swallow a whole power structure along with it — to believe that “not speaking up” is shameful and that “being eager to express yourself” is healthy. This kind of definition is like a cheap card trick: the first time you see it, you believe it. Once you see through it, you cannot be bothered anymore. You just find it boring.

Human beings spend so much time on boring shit like this.

The unspeakable is interesting. The unfathomable tide of the ocean is a mystery. The fries at the docks might actually be good. The world that has not yet been neatly captured by language, has not yet been standardized by vulgar power discourse — it brims with possibility after possibility. No fantasy can compare to the fantasy of the unknown.

Do you really have to speak at all?
